Two open housekeeping positions, an estimated €18,000 a month in overtime and lost capacity, and a service team close to burnout. Here’s how the timeline played out.
The starting point: a 90-room hotel in the Salzburg region running two housekeeping positions short for most of a season, covering the gap with overtime and agency temp staff. The operations director estimated the monthly cost — overtime premiums, temp agency fees, and rooms held out of inventory on the busiest days — at around €18,000, within the range typical for under-staffed hospitality operations.
The employer’s first conversation with VLO was a discovery call, not a sales pitch: was the Philippine route realistic for their timeline, or would a different solution serve them better given how urgently the positions needed filling. The honest answer was that a Philippine hire wouldn’t solve the immediate gap — but it would prevent the same gap from recurring next season.
Two candidates were shortlisted through the licensed partner agency within the first six weeks — both with prior hotel housekeeping experience and B1-track German already under way. Document verification and the RWR application ran in parallel with language completion.
From first contact to both employees starting on-site: just under seven months, close to the typical range for hospitality roles on this track. In the interim, the hotel kept covering the gap with temp staff — the case for the Philippine route wasn’t speed, it was permanence.
“We’d tried filling these roles locally for over a year before we even looked at this option,” the operations director says. “What convinced us wasn’t a sales pitch — it was seeing the actual timeline and being told honestly that it wouldn’t be fast. Eighteen months later, both of them are still with us. That’s longer than anyone we hired locally in that role stayed.”
The estimated annual saving, based on the reduced overtime and temp-staffing spend after both positions were filled: roughly €150,000 to €200,000 — a range consistent with resolving a persistent €15,000–€20,000-a-month gap.
