Six years in hospitality in Manila, a B1 German course, and eleven months later, a permanent housekeeping and service role in an Austrian hotel.
Maria S. had six years of hospitality experience in Manila before she ever heard of the Philippine-to-Austria route — three years in housekeeping supervision, three more in front-of-house service at a mid-sized hotel. “I wanted to work abroad for a long time,” she says. “Family in the Gulf had done it. Austria wasn’t somewhere I’d thought about until an agency mentioned the hospitality shortage there.”
The process started with a language course — intensive German through B1, run in Manila alongside her existing job. “The language part took the longest to feel confident in, honestly, longer than the paperwork,” she says. Her documents — hospitality certifications, references, employment history — went through the licensed agency’s screening in parallel.
From first application to boarding a flight, the process took just under eleven months, in line with the typical RWR timeline for her role. “There were points where nothing seemed to be happening,” she says. “That’s the hardest part — trusting that the paperwork is moving even when you can’t see it.”
She now works housekeeping and guest service at a mid-sized hotel in the Salzburg region. Her employer, who asked not to be named for this piece, describes the arrangement simply: “We were down two people for most of a season before Maria’s team started. The difference in guest reviews alone told us this was worth the wait.”
Asked what she’d tell someone considering the same path, Maria doesn’t hesitate: “Start the language course before you think you’re ready. And don’t expect it to be fast — expect it to be worth it.”
